AUSTRALIA’S RELATIONSHIP WITH INDONESIA

Indonesia is Australia’s closest neighbour. Australia’s trade relationship with Indonesia and its quick response to the tsunami disaster in Aceh clearly demonstrated the depth and importance of the bilateral relationship.

For more Australian companies than ever before, trade with Indonesia is a key part of corporate strategy as Indonesia’s resource-hungry manufacturers and its increasingly affluent middle class provide ever expanding market opportunities. An estimated 400 Australian firms are operating in Indonesia in a range of sectors, including the mining, construction, finance and banking, food and beverages, and transport sectors. In 2007 Indonesia was Australia’s 13th largest trading partner, 11th largest export market, and 11th largest source of imports. Total two-way merchandise trade was valued at $8.5 billion.

Indonesia is the largest recipient of Australian development funding. During his June 2008 Indonesia visit, Prime Minister Rudd announced Australia's strengthened $2.5 billion five year development partnership with Indonesia to help tackle poverty and promote regional peace, stability and prosperity.

On 28 August 2008, Australia and Indonesia, along with the nine other ASEAN countries and New Zealand, concluded negotiations for the region-wide ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (AANZFTA). AANZFTA strengthens Australia's economic engagement with the ASEAN region and provides a platform for securing further liberalisation of trade and investment in the future.
